Welcome to Singapore

Singapore is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. Made up of over 65 islands and islets, Singapore is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the strait of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south.

The country is highly urbanised, with very little primary rainforest remaining. Its territory has consistently expanded through land reclamation. Singapore is one of the world's leading commercial hubs, with the fourth-biggest financial centre and one of the five busiest marine ports. Its globalised and diversified economy depends heavily on trade.

Singapore is a popular tourist destination in South East Asia, making tourism one of the largest economic sectors. More than 15 million tourists visit Singapore every year. To attract more visitors, in 2005 the government decided to legalize gambling and to allow two casinos and integrated resorts to be built in the Marina South and Sentosa Island to compete with regional rivals like Macau, Bangkok and Hong Kong.

The climate of Singapore is classified as tropical rainforest climate, with no true distinct seasons. Owing to its geographical location and maritime exposure, close to the equator, its climate is characterized by uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity and abundant rainfall. So it is almost always warm and wet. The temperature hovers around a diurnal range of a minimum of 23°C and a maximum of 32°C. May is the hottest month of the year in Singapore.
